Here at Sulis, we are unashamedly in love with pretty much all of the Bumble and bumble products, so imagine our delight as news hit of a brand spanking new range of Bumble products. Bb. Mending

Smooth evenly through hair after shampooing (using the mending shampoo) and leave on for two minutes. It’s a great intense conditioner for when there isn’t enough time for a masque.

Work it with ease...

In true British style, after spending months lamenting the lack of sun, we have now taken up a new past-time: Lamenting the dreaded humidity. But of course!

Make no mistake, it's not that we aren't grateful for the opportunity to air the summer wardrobe, its just that it raises all kinds of hair issues- as if life wasn't hard enough.

The coping strategy? Wear it up. As always, we have your best interests at heart, and have compiled a selection of hair-up ideas to ensure that you look your best whatever the climate.

'Hair up' doesn't have to mean 'boring'. Sulis were horrified to see Cameron Diaz with a PONYTAIL at the premier of her new film 'Knight and Day'. There's a place for hair like that: Primary School.

Let us lead you away from the bland, and instead, inspire you to create some summer hair art of your very own.

Put a ribbon in it

With hairbands looking to make a bold comeback this Autumn, accessories are definitely something to go for. Ribbons are a cheap and original way to add interest to a style and look stunning woven into a plait or twist.

How to create this look yourself:

1. Prep dry hair with Bumble and bumble 'Grooming Creme' (£20.00)
2. Take a section of hair to one side of the head and feed your ribbon underneath it (as if you were to tie the hair up)
3. Make a small knot and then turn this knot to face the scalp.
4. Start to plait the section of hair in whatever way you choose and weave the ribbon in with the plait.
5. Secure with a transparent hair elastic- chemists/ pharmacies often do great ones- and grip in place.

For a softer look, gently tug strands loose from the plait and pull a few away from the braid to frame the face.

For an alternative on the plait, try a twist. Smooth a two-pence sized amount of Bumble and bumble Leave-in Conditioner (£16.50)through the lengths and ends of the hair to nourish and moisturise and secure at the tips. This is great for holidays as the product contains a UV filter. We laugh in the face of dryness!

The Vertical Roll

This is a bit of an old-school style, but still has the potential to be totally headturning. It also looks pretty intricate, but is actually not all that difficult to do- promise. Add a theatrical quiff into the mix, and you have quite a rocky, glamorous result.

The how to...

1. Spray hair with a moderate amount of Bumble and bumble 'Does It All' Styling Spray (£19.00). Gently backcomb hair all over at the root using a comb.
2. Smooth one side of the hair to the head and clip centrally at the back of the head using hair grips. (Leave a small 'fringe' section at the top of the forehead out).
3. Take the other section of hair and roll up from the tips to make a polo mint shape and pin in place covering your other gripped section.
4. Finally, take the fringe section and smooth it back in a quiff shape. Be as dramatic as you like and finish with Bumble and bumble Extra Strength Holding Spray (£16).

We leave you with a far cooler alternative to the messy bun!

When Hair Goes Fairytale…

This month our hair is enjoying a fairytale all of its own. This is the moment when fantasy and reality collide, culminating in dreamy, romantic hair in the form of The Beehive.

Banish those visions of Winehouse in her darker days- or those slightly staid early 60’s versions- the new beehive is more ‘Disheveled Ice-Queen’. We know it’s hard to take at the moment, but as we all know, good hair needs planning. This is the perfect look to take us into Autumn/Winter!

Tradition gets adventurous as the catwalks play with texture and colour to create a modernistic urban fantasy. As fashion experiments with chunky cable knits worn over billowing maxi skirts, beehives provide the perfect partnership, combining powdered palettes and light, airy volume with tough leather headbands and plenty of attitude.

The modern beehive is all about movement and wearability. Karl Lagerfeld sent models down the runways with textured height from the crown scooping back to be pinned at the nape of the neck, giving the illusion of shorter hair. The good news is that this look is suitable for those with bobbed to long-length hair. Have a look at the styles below for inspiration…

The Beehive How-to

1. Spray Bumble and bumble Surf Spray (£17.50) to dry hair and blow dry into the hair to create texture and malleable hold.

2. Backcomb your whole head using a fine tooth comb. The best way to create real height is by working a fine tooth comb about three centimeters away from the root and pushing down firmly towards the scalp. Work down the hair from the root to about three quarters of the length of the hair.

3. Once back-combed, smooth the hair’s surface, using a soft bristle brush to create cloud-like volume.

4. Loosely smooth hair back to create height and pin in place. Use headbands a la Karl and Prada to cover up the join if you wish.

5. Generously spray Bumble and bumble Extra Strength Holding Spray (£16.00) to finish the style.

Remember, the shape you are going for is rounded, wispy and o-so-slightly rebellious. Beehive? BEHAVE! Xx

Just a little bit purrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr...!!

It’s been building for a while, and we can now confirm that the rumors are true: The straightening irons have been exiled. Harsh? We think not. Too many hours of too many days have been wasted steaming the soul out of our innocent locks, and now, it’s time to liberate that natural texture. Flicks? Kinks? Bring it on.

The texture of your hair changes every five to seven years, so rather than fighting it, we think it makes a lot more sense to go with the flow.
Love her or hate her (we love), one woman who looks great embracing her natural texture is Sarah Jessica Parker. If you haven’t seen the latest SATC film, we advise that you do, if only on a hair-based level!

The infamous Carrie Bradshaw is seen sporting curls in various guises throughout the film, one being the beautifully voluminous textured curls pictured below.
Inspired?

Step 1: The key to having great curls is to make sure your hair is well moisturised, otherwise it will become dry and be prone to frizz, so always wash your hair with a great moisturising shampoo and conditioner. We love Bumble and bumble Crème De Coco Shampoo (£16.50) and Conditioner (£17.50).
Step 2: Once you have towel dried your hair add some Bumble and bumble Styling Spray (£11.00 for an o-so-convenient travel sized spray) which will help lock in moisture and intensify your curls.
Step 3: The key to drying curly hair is to use a diffuser on your hairdryer. Tip your head upside-down and gently scrunch your hair as it dries with the diffuser, as this will help give you volume at your roots. Don’t hold back!

Step 4: Next use a tail-comb (the small comb with the narrow end) to create a deep side parting over one eye and flip your hair to one side.
Step 5: To finish use a small amount of Bumble and bumble Defrizz Shine Serum (£27.50) onto your fingers and then use to twist and define random curls.
Step 6: Lightly spray with a flexible hair spray like Bumble and bumble Holding Spray (£16.00).

Et Voila! So much quicker, so much better for your hair!

Dip a toe in the water with these street style pioneers…

Go for disheveled all-over volume- anything too structured and you’re going to look like you’ve got tangled up in the early eighties- and not in a good way. Think less faux-mohawk and more all-over texture. As far as colour goes, the bolder the better.

Gone are the days of sugar water and beer (yes, really). Thanks to Bumble and bumble, there are some incredible products on the market to help you create a modern, matte texture. Ballerina Style

Time to reach for those ballet shoes ladies….

Few hairstyles have withstood the decades better than the classic ballerina bun. Elegantly timeless and effortlessly cool, the bun is as versatile as it is practical. Whatever your style, guaranteed, there’s a bun to suit you and your hair type.

The Spring/ Summer look is youthful, fresh, and airy. Avoid an overload of product, and focus on creating textured character. Unless you are twelve (or Kate Moss), slicked back styles can look a little severe, so best to aim for the non-overtly perfect finish either at the back of the head on the occipital, or cheekily on the crown.

The great thing about this style is it can look as high-fashion, elegant, or as natural as you want. Feast your eyes on some of these looks for inspiration….

The Top Knot

A more extreme take on the classic style, this is a look for the fearlessly fashionable. True, it requires confidence, but this style is by no-means reserved for Hoxton-ites. Milan and Paris pavements were scattered with the hi-top style at SS10 shows. Sulis Loves!

Daytime Downtime

This great daytime look is the hair-up version of bedhead hair. Favoured by celebrities such as Sienna Miller and Alexa Chung, the bun is pulled loosely to the lower-mid point of the hair with strands escaping to softly graze jawline.

Getting the height right is crucial to make those cheekbones pop! Skip the hair brush and use your fingers to create natural texture. If it takes too long to style, you’re probably trying too hard.

Red Carpet Glamour

To translate this look from am to pm, use plenty of shine spray and silkening serum. This time, you want to ensure the finished effect is both smooth and chic. To keep the look full and thick, avoid twisting the lengths too much before you create the shape of the bun.

Lacking length? Its at times like this that you are allowed clip-in hair pieces. This is dramatic, ice-queen hair at it’s best.

And now its your turn!!

How to achieve the (casual) look:

1. Prep hair with Bumble and bumble ‘Holding Foam’ (£21.00) then softly tong and brush out
2. To create a natural texture, get stuck in with your hands and gather the hair in a loose ponytail just below the occipital (the bone at the back of your head).
3. Twist the ponytail and mold into a soft ballet bun. Use your fingers to open the hair and create ‘flyaways’ for a soft texture.
4. Rub and distress the front of the hair for a youthful, natural feel.

Summer Hair: Do U Dare?

With all the excitement of the Autumn/Winter 2010 collections, it’s easy to forget that we are actually just approaching Spring- and please, lets not wish it away! In a deliciously rebellious response to the matte, tousled waves of past months, Summer hair trends are going poolside. Take a deep breath though: Its about to get a whole lot sexier.

Paired with dewy, damp skin, Asish gives us slicked back, wet-look hair at it’s best. You’ve just got out of the pool and frankly, you’re too rock and roll to care. Pulling hair off the face can be quite a brave beauty move, but after hiding behind our fringes during the winter months, it’s a welcome change- just be sure to keep it straight- wet waves are a little too ‘80’s holiday’ for our liking…

UK Vogue’s April shoot with model-of-the-moment Lara Stone is a perfect example of wetlook hair with a modern twist. Its clean, fresh and a little bit sporty. Banish those hideous pots of gel from your mind, along with visions of spiral perms and ballerinas. Look to Bumble and bumble ‘Styling Crème’ and ‘Does It All’ styling spray to create the look.

Whilst the SS10 catwalks have been awash with long, tousled MOBS (that’s mid-length bob if you haven’t heard the latest catchphrase), the A-list are fighting back with a sharp new hair trend of their own: The Summer Crop. With summer approaching and necklines lowering, it’s time to get scissor happy and bid adieu to those tired, wintry lengths!

The new crop is almost childlike in it’s haphazard charm. Managing to be both pretty and tomboyish, the summer crop is kittenish and sexy, but in a most unselfconscious way. New style icon of the moment Carey Muligan has captured the hearts of the nation with her Oscar-winning crop.

Scissors, please....

Drawing inspiration from the iconic elfin styles made famous by Mia Farrow, Edie Sedgwick and Jean Seberg, this cut is heavily reminiscent of those ‘all-eyes-and-cheekbones’ 60’s looks. Check out these beautiful images for inspiration…

As with all short styles, you need confidence to carry it off, but the natural movement and texture within this style means the overall effect is overtly feminine. The beauty of this look is it’s low-maintenance appeal. Encouraging natural flicks and texture, there is nothing styled about it’s finish: You want it to look a bit ‘day-dreamy’ and quirky.

Colour is great for creating impact with shorter styles. Block colour is really effective when hair is worn this short, and can be as bold as you want.

"A modern take

on an Edwardian Fairytale...."

When designer Henrietta Ludgate approached Sulis London to create the looks for her AW10 show at London Fashion Week the Sulis team were thrilled to be involved. Producing sculptural designs with a Scottish influence, the young designer and Central St Martins Graduate sees fashion as a type of architecture, and believes that her clothing and the human body should be closely connected.

Having been awarded the Ethical Fashion Forum’s ‘Fashion Innovation Award’ for London Fashion Weeks SS10 judged by a panel including Roland Mouret and Vogue’s Dolly Jones, Sulis were very excited at the prospect of having involvement in such exciting and progressive designs.

The Concept

Luigi, Sven and Henrietta arranged a meeting prior to the show to formulate a creative concept using mood boards to draw together their individual ideas.

The resulting concept was a modern take on an Edwardian fairytale, the softly textured edges creating the perfect contrast to the clean, structural lines of Henrietta’s designs.

These dreamy, elfin looks were a fusion of the Tim Burton-esque ‘wonderlands’ combined with traditional Edwardian influence. The look maintained a fresh, and modern feel by using experimental textures and crimping.

A step by step guide from Luigi Inglese

1. Take the halo section (top circular section of hair) and clip away.
2. Prep hair with Bumble and bumble Surf Spray and blast until dry with a hairdryer to create a crispy texture.
3. Crimp in small, random sections.
4. Release the top section, and again, spray with Bumble and bumble Surf Spray and dry in with a hairdryer.
5. Backcomb the whole head- the wilder the better!
6. Roll the hair around a cylinder-shaped sponge and pin in place using hair grips

Step Into Spring With Metallic Pastels

As Springtime draws closer, you can almost hear Britain breathing a collective sigh of relief. Having bravely battled through one of the coldest winters yet, it would seem that this year more than ever before we are wholeheartedly deserving of some seasonal variation. Whether you take your inspiration from magazines, the high street or the catwalk, one colour trend stands head and shoulders above the rest: Pastels.

Sulis Colourist Melanie Lewin ensured that Pixie stood out from the crowd at the Elle Style Awards...

...by tinting the model/singer's hair a watery peppermint green. Having dabbled with peroxide and grey tones in the past, Bob Geldof's daughter is no stranger to a bit of hair-based experimentation. The pastel green tone is very on-trend for Spring, and adding a creme-based colour to the existing bleach on Pixie's hair, Melanie was able to update her hair without the commitment of a permanent dye.

Catwalks were awash with romantic, watery florals at New York Fashion Week, and these coppery pinks, rose golds and steely grey-blues are all going to be a the forefront of hair colour trends for Spring.

This sounds far scarier than it actually is. The key is to keep it subtle. Natural hair is still a key trend for 2010, but a careful consultation with your colourist can explore the various options open to you. Colour is applied in triangular panels underneath the centre parting and in sheets applied throughout the hair to give a draped effect. Whether you want to go for a bolder, more streaky effect or subtle, smudged colour, you can take it to whatever level works for you. Giles Deacon kept his colours muted and washed out, and Sulis Style Crush Dree Hemingway (see top of post) was spotted at New York Fashion week sporting a rose-tinted wash. The trend is based more on the style (or not) than the colour itself. Keep those straightening irons locked away and instead, opt for a relaxed, undone finish.

The pastel trend is accessible to all hair tones. A coppery pink wash looks amazing on blonde hair and coppers smudged over existing highlights also work well. Redheads can explore coppers, golds and magentas whilst brunettes should opt for apricots, coppers, or metallic blues. This trend is fresh and unique and is all about the individual creating their own style. The metallic tones within these pastel shades keep the colour soft, shiny and multi-dimensional.

Sulis Tip: If you want to stretch out the time between visits to your colourist, Sulis recommends opting for a brighter tone initially. This will soon fade into the desired ‘sun-fade’ pastel colour you’re after.

Time To Straighten Up

The Brazilian: Volume at the roots and a swing through the lengths...

The majority of us are guilty of consistently putting our hair through unspeakable tortures. Whether your weapon of choice is elemental, or involves peroxide or heat, the result is pretty consistent: Dry, frizzy and unmanageable hair. Not exactly the look we were going for…

Enter the Brazilian Keratin Treatment (otherwise known as The Brazilian Blowdry). This revolutionary natural treatment is set to start a hair revolution, and with celebs such as Nicole Richie swearing by it, the rest of Hollywood looks set to follow suit.

Containing keratin, a protein similar to the kind found in human hair, the treatment is chemical free and restorative- a far cry from the other straightening treatments on the market. Designed for curly, frizzy and unruly manes, there really is no limit to it’s powers. The best bit? It smells like chocolate!

The process is simple. A keratin rich creme of cocoa oil, clay, proteins and vitamins is painted directly onto clean hair and sealed in with hot irons. “But I’ve just rolled out of bed…”

Anyone who has successfully mastered the ‘bedhead’ look will admit that their hair couldn’t be further from ‘undone’ if it tried. Spring/Summer 2010 catwalk’s messy styles embraced a fresh, breezy type of glamour: Think picnic-in-the-country and you’re pretty much there.

This season’s artfully disheveled hair requires time, effort and product, and we are here to show you how it’s done.

The Chignon

The key to keeping this look elegant is creating a clear initial structure. This can then be gently unraveled to create a more worn-in finish. The chignon is always a catwalk staple, but this season, the classic feminine style has been reworked into something that is both tomboyish and scruffy. Bored of your long lengths but don’t want to chop it all off? Pinning the hair up is also a great way to flirt with shorter hair.

At Christopher Kane, model’s hair was loosely gathered at the nape of the neck with lightly backcombed height at the crown. This style works best on newly washed hair. The slightly fluffy texture will allow strands to escape and fall to frame the face creating that windswept style.

Step 1: Spritz hair with ‘Surf Spray’ to create texture and movement. Gather hair to the left hand side of the head and make a knot using the length of the hair

Step 2: Pull knot relatively tightly and twist the whole knot around to the right and pin in place against the head

Step 3: Mess up the end of the knot, pulling strands out at random and finish with lashings of ‘Does it All’ Hairspray.

The Flat-pack

At Karl Lagerfeld hair was ‘flat-packed’ to the back of the head.

A step by step guide from Sven Bayerbach (Creative Director at Sulis):

Step 1: Spray ‘Thickening Spray’ liberally to wet hair and blast with a hairdryer upside-down for plump volume

Step 2: Section the top of the hair and gather the rest in a pony tail at the back of the head (leaving the top section out) and secure in place with a non-snag hair band.

Step 3: Backcomb the top section and pin in a subtle quiff, fixing with ‘Classic Spray’.

Step 4: Separate the ponytail into three (or as many as desired) parts and twist and pin flat to the head. Don’t worry about fly-aways or irregularities, this just adds to the look!

The Undone Braid

The braid has been dominating catwalks worldwide for SS10 and Sulis can’t get enough of the ‘day on the beach’ inspired looks seen at Alexandra Wang. This style works best on one-day old hair- newly washed hair will look too fresh, and creating that windswept, separated texture will prove more difficult. Having a bit of existing length will help (shorter layers will tend to escape from a low slung plait) but there’s no shame in giving yourself a helping hand with some clip-in extensions.

What products should I use?

As we all know, using the correct product means the difference between straight-off-the-catwalk cool and an all-out hair-fail. Bumble and bumble hair powder is available in blonde, red, brown and black, and is great for that in-between washes hair needed for a look like this. Hold the can 10-12 inches away from the roots and apply directly to dry hair working the product in with your fingers for ‘rootsy’ volume.

Before braiding, liberally spray Bumble and bumble Surf Spray to the lengths and ends of your hair. This is the wonder spray that will give you that effortlessly sexy, surf hair that pretty much every girl lusts after: A true ‘desert island’ product. The less you touch it, the longer it will hold, so pull hair to one side and loosely plait the hair straight after applying the spray.

The added bonus? When you take the plait out, you’ll be left with tumbling waves- and not a styling tool in sight!
