Crop It

Beautifully Imperfect: Jean Seburg

"Smart Listens To The Head, Stupid Listens To The Heart"

Pixie Geldof does cropped-chic in the new Diesel Campaign

Whilst the SS10 catwalks have been awash with long, tousled MOBS (that’s mid-length bob if you haven’t heard the latest catchphrase), the A-list are fighting back with a sharp new hair trend of their own: The Summer Crop. With summer approaching and necklines lowering, it’s time to get scissor happy and bid adieu to those tired, wintry lengths!

The new crop is almost childlike in it’s haphazard charm. Managing to be both pretty and tomboyish, the summer crop is kittenish and sexy, but in a most unselfconscious way. New style icon of the moment Carey Muligan has captured the hearts of the nation with her Oscar-winning crop.

Scissors, please....

Drawing inspiration from the iconic elfin styles made famous by Mia Farrow, Edie Sedgwick and Jean Seberg, this cut is heavily reminiscent of those ‘all-eyes-and-cheekbones’ 60’s looks. Check out these beautiful images for inspiration…

As with all short styles, you need confidence to carry it off, but the natural movement and texture within this style means the overall effect is overtly feminine. The beauty of this look is it’s low-maintenance appeal. Encouraging natural flicks and texture, there is nothing styled about it’s finish: You want it to look a bit ‘day-dreamy’ and quirky.

Colour is great for creating impact with shorter styles. Block colour is really effective when hair is worn this short, and can be as bold as you want.

"If you’re tempted to experiment with peroxide, this is the length to really go for it, as the hair will be strong enough to take harsh colour." Melanie Lewin

What to ask for in the salon

“A soft edged crop with enough length to create texture and movement throughout the style”
Sven Bayerbach

Despite suiting the majority of hair types, curly or coarse hair should keep the cut closer to the scalp to ensure it is kept under control.
